A teacher who wants a doctorate in education meets two titles very quickly, the Doctor of Education (EdD) and the PhD in Education, and the search results mostly argue about which one ranks higher. The better question is which one the research you already want to do belongs to. The regulations of universities in the United Kingdom and Australia answer that in plain terms, and they also show that the practical differences are larger than the name suggests.

Direct answer: An EdD is a professional doctorate for people with years of work in education, usually part-time, with a taught phase and a thesis of 50,000 to 70,000 words. A PhD in Education is a research degree that asks for research capacity, not work experience, with a thesis of 80,000 to 100,000 words.

Question1

◆ Question 1 / 6 · Prestige

Is a PhD more prestigious than an EdD?

Direct answer: The sources used for this article do not rank them. Australia's qualifications framework places both at level 10 under one descriptor, and the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) treats professional doctorates and PhDs together in a single doctoral characteristics statement. The difference lies in the kind of contribution and the route, not in a ranking.

The Australian Qualifications Framework (n.d.) says there are two forms of doctoral degree with the same descriptor, the Doctoral Degree (Research) and the Doctoral Degree (Professional), and that doctoral qualifications sit at level 10. In its words, the research doctorate, typically called a Doctor of Philosophy, makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge, while the professional doctorate makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge in the context of professional practice. Both phrases carry the words "significant and original", and that wording is what examiners hold both degrees to. Whether an employer or a hiring panel reads one title as more prestigious than the other is a different question, and none of the regulatory documents consulted for this article answers it. A school leader looking at promotion, a lecturer looking at an academic post and a policy officer looking at a ministry role may weigh the two titles differently, so ask the people who will read your CV rather than relying on a general ranking.

Question2

◆ Question 2 / 6 · Can a teacher have a PhD

Can a teacher have a PhD?

Direct answer: Yes. Monash University states that applicants to its PhD in Education must show a capacity to carry out independent research and adequate training to pursue the proposed study, and it names no professional-experience requirement. A teacher can apply directly, though the thesis has to be framed as a contribution to knowledge.

Monash University (n.d.) describes its PhD in Education as a research thesis, or an alternative approved output, of no more than 80,000 words, over 3 to 4 years full-time or 6 to 8 years part-time. The entry statement is about research ability, and the page does not ask for classroom years or a leadership role. That does not make a PhD easier for a teacher, because the proposal has to be built from a gap in the literature, not from a problem in a school. A teacher who is already studying a problem in their own setting and wants the findings to change practice there will find the EdD structure closer to the work. A teacher who wants to test or extend a theory of learning, assessment or policy, and who is comfortable leaving their own school as the main site, will find the PhD closer. The PhD application resource hub explains how admission panels read each kind of proposal.

Question3

◆ Question 3 / 6 · Admissions compared

How do EdD and PhD admissions requirements compare?

Direct answer: EdD programmes ask for professional experience, usually at least two years in education. PhD programmes ask mainly for research preparation. Nottingham asks for two years of professional experience, UNSW three (UNSW Sydney, n.d.), UWA two (The University of Western Australia, 2026), and Monash states no experience requirement for its PhD (Monash University, n.d.).

The table sets the published requirements next to each other, using each university's own page, so check the current year's page before you apply.

University and degree Experience asked Thesis length Duration stated
Nottingham, EdD Minimum two years' relevant professional experience 50,000 to 60,000 words, or a three-paper portfolio Minimum four years part-time
UEA, EdD Experience in a relevant professional area Up to 60,000 words 5 years part-time
UNSW, EdD At least three years' experience (one entry route) Typically 50,000 to 60,000 words Four years part-time by design
UWA, EdD Equivalent of at least two years full-time Up to 70,000 words Not stated in the rules
Exeter, EdD and PhD Not stated in the handbook extract EdD 50,000 words; PhD 100,000 words Not stated in the extract
Monash, PhD in Education None stated No more than 80,000 words 3 to 4 years full-time

Read the cells with care. Exeter's handbook sets an EdD dissertation at no more than 50,000 words and a PhD thesis at no more than 100,000 (University of Exeter, n.d.), and that PhD figure is a university-wide limit, not one set for education. UNSW's three-year experience requirement belongs to the route for applicants without the other qualifications. The pattern is still clear: the EdD asks you to arrive as a practitioner, the PhD asks you to arrive as a researcher, and both usually expect you to explain what you want to study.

Question4

◆ Question 4 / 6 · Thesis or portfolio

What is a dissertation in practice compared to a PhD dissertation?

Direct answer: The UK and Australian pages used here do not use the phrase "dissertation in practice". They describe an EdD thesis or portfolio, examined for research quality like a PhD, with a stronger link to professional practice. QAA says the final award rests on a supervised research project, projects or portfolio, usually after taught elements.

The QAA (2020, p. 9) states that professional and practice-based doctorates usually contain taught elements with significant lecture and seminar content, but that the final award is based on a supervised research project, projects or portfolio. Nottingham's regulations make this concrete: a candidate completes 120 credits of modules, normally by the end of the second year, and then a thesis of 50,000 to 60,000 words or, if agreed with supervisors, a portfolio of three linked pieces of research of 10,000 to 12,000 words each plus an overview of 20,000 to 24,000 words (University of Nottingham, n.d.). UEA describes a thesis of up to 60,000 words that incorporates four formative assignments, examined orally (University of East Anglia, n.d.). The AQF (n.d.) adds that the professional doctorate makes its original contribution in the context of professional practice, which is why an EdD thesis is usually tied to a workplace problem. The word "dissertation" in this heading comes from search queries, and this article has not checked how North American programmes use it.

Question5

◆ Question 5 / 6 · Equivalent or not

Is an EdD equivalent to a PhD?

Direct answer: Yes: both are doctoral degrees, and in Australia both sit at AQF level 10. They are not interchangeable in route or purpose. The EdD is built for practitioners with a taught phase, and the PhD is built for independent researchers. QAA (2020, p. 8) calls professional doctorates often post-experience qualifications.

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (2020) says professional and practice-based doctorates "provide an opportunity for individuals to situate professional knowledge developed over time in a theoretical academic framework" (p. 8). That sentence explains the equivalence and the difference together. The academic framework, with its demands for criticality and originality, is shared with the PhD, while the starting point, professional knowledge developed over time, is specific to the professional route. The QAA (2020, p. 9) adds that professional doctorates are rooted in an academic discipline as well as in a profession, education being its first example. The same document (QAA, 2020, p. 3) records that professional doctorates emerged in different subjects beginning with the EdD, for employed professionals returning mid-career. Equivalent in level, then, but chosen for different reasons. If you plan to move later into a research-intensive university post, ask a department head how they read each title, because that is a hiring judgement and not a regulatory one.

Question6

◆ Question 6 / 6 · Which one fits

Which doctorate fits a teacher, and how do you decide?

Direct answer: Choose the EdD when your research question comes from your own practice and you want to keep working while you study. Choose the PhD when the question comes from the literature, you can commit to a longer research-only period, and you want the contribution framed as knowledge. The name matters less than the regulations of the programme.

Start with three questions. First, where does your question come from: a school, a department or a policy problem you already know from work, or a gap you found while reading? Second, how will you fund and fit the time: an EdD at Nottingham runs for a minimum of four years part-time and UEA lists five years part-time, while a full-time PhD at Monash is stated as 3 to 4 years. Third, how much taught structure do you want: the EdD includes modules, such as UNSW's eight coursework components of 48 units of credit (UNSW Sydney, n.d.), while the PhD route is mostly independent. Then read the examiners' criteria and the thesis rules of each programme on your list. For the DBA comparison on the business side, see what separates a DBA from a PhD.

When the next step is turning a teaching or leadership problem into a doctoral research question, MAAS works with you through PhD application strategy: your expert drafts the proposal from your own account of your research, you review, edit and approve it and attend the interviews, and the expert challenges the question, the design and the fit with the programme you are applying to. Where our network already includes a suitable expert we usually introduce them within 48 hours, and where it does not we open a dedicated search, which usually takes about two weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a doctorate in education or a doctorate of education?

Both forms are used, but the formal degree titles use "Doctor of Education" for the EdD, and QAA (2020, p. 8) notes that providers normally use the convention "Doctor of…" for professional doctorates. A "PhD in Education" is the research degree. Check the exact title on the programme page, because it is the title that will appear on your certificate.

What is the best doctorate degree to get in education?

No source consulted ranks them, so the useful test is fit. The EdD suits a practitioner with experience whose question comes from practice. The PhD suits a researcher whose question comes from the literature. Compare thesis length, duration, taught modules and entry experience for the specific programmes you are considering before deciding.

Can I do an EdD while working full-time as a teacher?

Many are designed for that. Nottingham states a minimum of four years part-time, UEA lists five years part-time, and UNSW describes a part-time design over four years. UEA also expects at least 60 hours of independent study per month, so plan the time before you apply.

Is an EdD shorter than a PhD?

The thesis is usually shorter, since EdD limits in these sources run from 50,000 to 70,000 words against 80,000 at Monash and 100,000 at Exeter. Total time is often not shorter, because the taught phase and part-time study stretch the EdD to four or five years part-time at Nottingham and UEA.

Do I need a master's degree first?

UNSW lists first or upper-second class Honours (research) in education, or a coursework masters with a distinction average and evidence of research capacity, alongside its experience route. Monash asks for demonstrated research capacity and adequate training. Requirements differ, so read the entry rules of each programme.

Will an EdD guarantee a job as a headteacher or lecturer?

No programme or adviser can promise that. QAA (2020, p. 8) describes professional doctorates as frequently the doctoral degree of choice for mid-career professionals, which describes who studies them, not what employers will do.

Does MAAS ask for a result or promise an offer?

No. MAAS advisory work does not set grade targets or promise admission. It supports the proposal, the application and the interview preparation, and you decide what is submitted.
